Data Domain Replicator Software

Replication has been the preferred method for protecting storage against site failure but it is only deployed in specific market situations because of associated bandwidth cost. Some budgets can afford it – most cannot - and therefore IT has used the manual, insecure and error-prone approach of tapes and trucks.

Deduplication storage offers a way out. By efficiently finding the differences between old and new backups, it enables replication for backup data, which is both easier to recover and more comprehensive in most IT shops than other copy methods. Data Domain leverages variable-length dedupe coupled with compression and therefore can eliminate more than 99% of the bandwidth used by copying backups whole.

Customer experience has led Data Domain to conclude that there are 3 essential principles to consider in the deployment of replication:

    1. Speed and Safety. ‘Time-to-DR’ is critical. Data Domain design elements, such as inline deduplication, continuous data consistency at the replica, and fast restore streams from replicas, all contribute to fast recovery at the replica site and as quickly as possible after data is initially stored on the originating system.

    2. Flexibility. Any given dedupe replication method does not fit all WANs. It is important to offer choices in topology and work over a wide variety of link types to enable balance in speed vs. efficiency.

    3. Simplicity. Data Domain leverages deduplication deeply in everything from DR system mirroring to migration and redeployment and from backup to archiving. Data Domain integrates replication with all supported protocols and options, such as dedupe snapshots and Data Domain Retention Lock software.
